Workwear Group teams up with Gold Coast City Council

After a longstanding business relationship with the Gold Coast City Council, the Workwear Group Brisbane team volunteered for a Corporate Clean Up on June 8th. Organised by Volunteering Gold Coast in collaboration with Humpbacks & Highrises, the volunteering event was marked as a day of humanity to celebrate the ocean and help clean up the The Spit, Gold Coast.
Home to one of the largest marine protection programs for marine mammals, Humpbacks & Highrises has been actively researching and making efforts to protect marine mammals since 2011. Together with Volunteering Gold Coast, they created this event to coincide with World Ocean Day for corporate members to get together as a way to bond over creating great social impact and working towards a positive outcome.

The Workwear Group Brisbane team were certainly up to the challenge and joined over 90 volunteers from other organisations for the clean-up. Collecting around 13 bags of rubbish, most of which were fishing lines, bottles and can, the team certainly made an impact and enjoyed their time doing it too.

It was a great opportunity to partner with Volunteering Gold Coast to give back to the Gold Coast Community.

Joeanne Hope, Sales Manager QLD at Workwear Group.

The team met at The Spit at 9:45am and was briefed by members of Volunteering Gold Coast who explained the impact of simply picking up rubbish and emphasised that they can ultimately save the lives of marine animals constantly affected by rubbish left to flow into the ocean. Sent to different areas, they worked together and clean areas of the beach for around 2 hours before a welcomed lunch break. A representative of Humpbacks & Highrises was present to help out as well as speak on the topics of their research, the importance of keeping beaches like The Spit clean and how it affects animals in the ocean.

To gain a bit more insight from the day, we’ve conducted a short Q&A with Margaret Dykstra; an eCommerce manager based in the Workwear Group Brisbane office:

What was the best and/or most rewarding part of the experience?
The weather was beautiful to start with but did start to spit around 2pm. It was nice to be doing something outside of the office and part of a team. We were happy and felt proud to be wearing our KingGee T-shirts.

How much did the team manage to collect and what was the most interesting thing you found?
We collected 3 bags, one of which was pretty full. Some of the items we found were fishing lines, bottles, cans, plastic bits, lots of cigarette butts and the most interesting thing that was found was a rug. Oh and a pair of undies (yuck).

Would you do it again next year and encourage teams across AU/NZ to also participate in any local events like this?
Yes, I would do this again! And encourage others to maybe participate in something around the homeless as it really puts into perspective what is going on in our community that you don’t often see. It’s a great way to help and feel part of something bigger.

Has the experience emphasised or strengthened any sustainability and waste practices in your life and at work since or do you think it will?
Yes, for sure. I am not one for throwing rubbish but if I see something on the ground, I will make sure to pick it up. These items flow into our waterways and cause such devastation for our marine life.

We are so proud of the team’s efforts and the social impact the team contributed in just a few short hours. World Ocean Day supports collaborative conversation and rallies people to get together to protect and restore our blue planet from the 6.4 million tonnes of waste dumped into the ocean every year. The Corporate Clean Up was a great example of the huge contribution we can make from a few hours of team bonding while giving back to the community and local wildlife.
