The Stubbies brand was established in 1972 by clothing manufacturer Edward Fletcher and Co. More than 750,000 pairs of Stubbies were sold across Australia in that first year.
Choosing a catchy name for the new short proved difficult. Inspiration came from Australia’s favorite drink. After days of trying to come up with a name, one of the salesmen got up and said “This is thirsty work, I’m going out for a Stubbie [of beer].” The meeting went quiet, the same thought crossing their minds and the Stubbies brand was born. Nearly 40 years, later most Australians still have a soft spot for these iconic shorts.
Stubbies has become part of Australian culture so much so that it has entered the Dinkum Dictionary (a guide to Aussie English) as "Strong short shorts for men".
Stubbies Clothing Co was the first Queensland sponsor for the inaugural State of Origin rugby league match in 1980.
Today, Stubbies is recognised as an iconic Australian brand that provides affordable clothing spanning Workwear, Casual Wear and Schoolwear.
