A Morning of Meaning: How Our Partnership with The Big Issue Continues to Drive Real Impact

Since 2022, Workwear Group has proudly partnered with The Big Issue to support their mission of creating meaningful work opportunities for people experiencing homelessness, disadvantage, or social exclusion. Now entering our fourth year together, the partnership continues to demonstrate how business and social enterprise can work side by side to create genuine, lasting impact.

What began as a values-led collaboration has grown into a hands-on, people-first partnership. It strengthens community connection, supports inclusion, and provides our people with meaningful opportunities to engage directly with The Big Issue’s programs and Vendors.

Who The Big Issue Is and Why Their Work Matters

The Big Issue is an independent, not-for-profit social enterprise that creates employment opportunities for people often excluded from traditional work. Since 1996, more than 7,700 Vendors have sold over 14 million magazines, generating more than $40 million in income and helping thousands take positive steps toward stability and independence.

Their impact spans several key initiatives:

  • The Big Issue Magazine – Vendors earn an income selling the fortnightly magazine while building routine, confidence, and connection
  • The Women’s Workforce – Flexible, supportive employment for women experiencing disadvantage
  • Community Street Soccer Program – Weekly sessions promoting wellbeing, inclusion, and social connection
  • The classroom – Education programs building awareness through lived-experience storytelling

Across every program, the mission remains constant: every person deserves the opportunity to reshape their story.

Workwear Group’s Ongoing Commitment

Over four years, this partnership has become one of the most meaningful ways Workwear Group supports the community. Our involvement continues to evolve and includes:

  • Providing uniforms for Vendors and Women’s Workforce participants
  • Supporting magazine launches and community events
  • Creating volunteering opportunities for our people across the country
  • Sharing Vendor and program stories
  • Building genuine, human connections

Our teams regularly participate in Big Issue activities, from launch events to community support initiatives, reinforcing the practical, people-first nature of the partnership.

A Morning to Remember: Jacqui’s Experience

As part of our ongoing volunteering efforts, Marketing Manager Jacqui Westwood joined The Big Issue team for a magazine launch celebrating the Bruce Springsteen edition.

The morning was filled with warmth and energy. Vendors gathered in large numbers, music set the tone, and volunteers prepared and served toasties, coffee, fresh fruit, and sweet treats. The Big Issue also unveiled their annual calendar — a much-loved initiative that directly supports Vendor income.

Jacqui reflected:

“What struck me most was the simplicity of the task and the depth of its impact. I assembled sandwiches, others toasted them or brewed coffee, and it all came together effortlessly. The Vendors were warm, chatty and full of appreciation — not just for the food, but for their new uniforms and the strong sense of community.”

A highlight of the morning was drawing the winning ticket for a Vendor prize, met with cheers and smiles. Jacqui also connected with Vendors whose resilience and gratitude left a lasting impression.

“I left feeling uplifted and grateful — for stability, for work, for home, and for the privilege of being part of something bigger than myself.”

Why These Moments Matter

Social enterprises like The Big Issue create more than income. They foster belonging, confidence, dignity, and connection. For many Vendors, selling a magazine or participating in community programs represents an important step forward.

When our people volunteer, they’re not simply giving time. They’re sharing moments of human connection that can brighten a day, strengthen confidence, and reinforce community.

Looking Ahead

As we enter our fourth year of partnership, Workwear Group remains committed to supporting The Big Issue through uniform supply, volunteering, and ongoing community engagement.

Because as Jacqui’s experience reminds us, sometimes the simplest gestures — a shared conversation, a helping hand, a warm smile — can create the most meaningful impact.
