Wesfarmers History

A summary of significant events in the history of Wesfarmers, founded in 1914

Wesfarmers is an Australian conglomerate with operations in several industries, including retail, mining, chemicals, and industrial supplies. The company has a rich history and it has grown to become one of the largest and most successful companies in Australia.

The origins of Wesfarmers can be traced back to the establishment of the Farmers' Cooperative Store in 1914 in Perth, Western Australia. The cooperative was formed by a group of farmers who were seeking to increase their purchasing power and reduce their costs by buying goods in bulk. The cooperative store was successful, and it soon expanded to other parts of Western Australia.

Today, Wesfarmers is one of the largest and most successful companies in Australia. It operates a range of businesses in several industries, including: home improvement, outdoor living, and building materials; general merchandise and apparel; office supplies and technology products; health, beauty, and wellness products; wholesale distribution of pharmaceuticals; manufacturing and distribution of chemicals and fertilizers; mine development and construction; industrial and safety product distribution; retail and commercial energy supply; as well as a robust data and digital ecosystem.

As one of Australia's major private sector employers, Wesfarmers boasts a workforce of nearly 120 000 dedicated team members. Additionally, it is owned by a substantial shareholder base consisting of more than 515,000 individuals.
